Chapter 7 — Off to Cardinal… or Not?

After breakfast, once we packed up our things, it was finally time to set out for the town of Cardinal!

But then… a problem arose. Mashiro and the captain started arguing over who would take me along.

“My master will ride with me to town!”

“No, I’ll take him with me!”

Mashiro wanted me on his back, while the captain intended to seat me with him on his horse. When departure came, they realized their plans clashed—and the quarrel began.

“He is my master! Of course I’ll carry him!”

“Yuuki is still small. He needs support. Riding with me on the horse is safest!”

The argument dragged on. Then both turned to me at once:

“Yuuki, which do you prefer?!”

I froze. I liked being with Mashiro, but I also liked being with the captain. Why did they have to fight? I just wanted everyone to get along.

“I… I…”

Tears welled up. Seeing this, the vice-captain stepped in, clearly angry.

“What are you two doing?! Yuuki is about to cry! Captain, you’re old enough to think about others’ feelings. I know you adore him, but making him cry defeats the purpose!”

Mashiro snorted, but the vice-captain turned on him too.

“Mashiro! You as well! Your duty is to protect your master, not make him cry!”

Nearby, Liam muttered, “He’s scolding the strongest Fenrir… incredible. Truly the Demon Vice-Captain.”

“What was that, Liam?”

“N-nothing!”

Liam hurried off with his gear. Meanwhile, the quarrel continued.

“He just won’t yield!”

“You should yield! I was with Yuuki first!”

The air around the vice-captain grew cold. The captain suddenly panicked.

“W-wait! I was wrong! Forgive me!”

Mashiro blinked. “I am not yet convinced—”

“Just apologize! If you make him truly angry, it’ll be disastrous!”

The captain tried to push Mashiro into apologizing too. I didn’t understand why he was so frantic.

The vice-captain sighed. “Enough. Yuuki, they’re only upsetting you. Leave them be. Come ride with me instead. I’ll tell you all about the town on the way.”

“Really? Yay!”

He lifted me up and carried me to his horse.

“Hey! That’s unfair!”

“Wait! I’m not finished—!”

“You two need punishment. Until you reflect, Yuuki won’t ride with you. I won’t let anyone who makes him cry stay close. Shoo!”

Scary… the vice-captain was really stern. But then he softened.

“Still, Yuuki, I won’t ignore your feelings. Do you want to ride with one of them instead?”

I looked back at Mashiro and the captain. Both stared at me hopefully. I wanted to ride with both, one after the other. But not while they were fighting. That wasn’t fun. So I said:

“If Mashiro and Captain fight, I don’t like it. I won’t ride with you until you make up. I’ll ride with Vice-Captain. I want to hear his stories!”

“Yuuki…”

“Master…”

“No! Make up first!”

They looked crushed. Mashiro’s fluffy tail drooped, and the captain hung his head in defeat. But they had brought it on themselves.

The vice-captain patted my head. “Good. If this happens again, tell me right away. I’ll scold them. I won’t allow anyone to make you cry.”

“Thank you, Vice-Captain. But… I want everyone to be friends. I love everyone.”

He smiled and stroked my hair. “Yes, it’s best when everyone is friends. Now, let’s go. We’ve wasted enough time. You two—carry the luggage!”

“What? Why me…?”

“I am a high-ranked beast, not a porter…”

Grumbling, Mashiro and the captain picked up the bags. I sat on the horse with the vice-captain, and at last, we set off for Cardinal.

“Departure!”

With my cheerful shout, the horse trotted forward.
